Cemeteries

Almost all cemeteries in New Orleans are built above ground. All family members are entombed in one large vault.

Carson Walker in Grace Lutheran Church which was totally flooded out. The Concordia group last fall gutted it and cleaned it out so it can be rebuilt (in progress at this time). Carson is pointing to the high water mark.

St. Bernard Parish

Here are some houses that didn't survive the onslaught of the storm surges. It is in St. Bernard Parish, the hardest hit area around New Orleans. The levee had been built to hold back 20 foot waves and Katrina produced 30 foot waves. So many homes in this area were wiped out. However, several blocks away from the levees, the majority of the homes are salvageable. We worked for two 1/2 days in one such home.

End of day one

End of day one, originally uploaded by tewold.

Half of our group worked at this house, the other half worked on a man's property to remove downed trees and get it clear. Job well done Trinity team- day one is over!!

Break time

Two work assignments, originally uploaded by tewold.

With wearing the hazemat suits and masks taking a break became VITALLY IMPORTANT! Darin Larson takes a long cold drink of water. Jessamy Alto also takes a break.

Hazmat Suits

Colin Balko removes a light fixture before tearing down the ceiling. We were required to wear "hazmat" suits the whole time we were in a house, to protect us from the mold, sludge, and other bacteria. Made working hot and tough.

Clean-up work

Clean-up work, originally uploaded by tewold.

This house was partially stripped when we arrived. Our job was to finish removing everything inside of it, taking it down to the bare studs only. From that point it can be rebuilt. Note Bonnie Sorenson removing sheet rock. Teri Larson finishes pulling nails and sheetrock in the kitchen

First day of work

First day of work, originally uploaded by tewold.

The house we worked on was 1/2 block from the 17th St. canal which broke during the flooding. Several homes are salvagable, but some are not. They have been knocked off their foundations; trees uprooted, cars in yards as well as other debris, air-conditioners lodged on rooftops.

An outfit from Trinity Lutheran in Moorhead

Abby is a member of the mission team from the UND PA Program working in Jeremie, Haiti. She dresses up this baby in an outfit made by women from Trinity Lutheran in Moorhead. The outfit includes a matching shirt, a cloth diaper, and a bonnet. Isn't he cute! THANK YOU women of Trinity!
